Today is Orange Shirt Day, in recognition of Indigenous children in Canada who suffered through the residential school system.

Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 in honour of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad from BC, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a Mission school in 1973.

Michelle Schryer, executive director of the Chatham-Kent Sexual Assault Crisis Centre says there’s a lesson that needs to be learned in Chatham-Kent.

“It’s important for us to learn about the perspective of Indigenous persons in Canada and educate ourselves about the history,” Schryer says. “Orange Shirt Day is giving us a chance to do that in Chatham-Kent.”

Orange Shirt Day is part of the Every Child Matters campaign, encouraging learning and understanding about the impact the residential school system had on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.
