A homeless shelter in Chatham is helping prevent the spread of Hepatitis C with an upcoming event.
In recognition of World Hepatitis Day, Chatham Hope Haven is providing a Hepatitis C testing and information session on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Wellington Street West shelter.
The event will also include a free community barbeque, swag and Tim Hortons gift cards for those who get tested.
Hepatitis C infection is caused by a virus that attacks the liver. It is transmitted primarily through blood-to-blood contact with an infected person. Hepatitis C can cause both acute and chronic infection, which can lead to serious liver disease or cancer.
