Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope is wading into the legalized marijuana debate.
Hope says before anything else, he wants to see more information and find out what sort of support the province is offering.
“It’s similar to that of the casinos,” Hope explains. “When casinos came in the province of Ontario, there was money given to communities as ‘host communities’ to deal with gambling or policing or other things.”
The Mayor says there are going to be 40 dispensary locations across the province to start.
“Everybody says ‘well jump on the bandwagon and be one of the 40’ and I’m pushing the government saying what is your output, What are you going to do?”
While the municipality has been behind the production side of legal marijuana in a big way, Hope says he needs to find out more about potential host fees and social supports before making any decisions.
