Hundreds of Backpacks Helping Families in Need

Mixed emotions for volunteers at FreeHelpCK as the organization puts the wraps on Operation Backpack.

With the help of generous donors and sponsors across Chatham-Kent, the group was able to provide 1276 backpacks to families in need this year, and another 85 to Outreach for Hunger in Chatham.

The school supplies helped support families across the municipality with 59 handed out in Wallaceburg, 42 in Tilbury, 25 in Blenheim, 24 in Ridgetown, 21 in Wheatley, and 17 in Dresden.

In the midst of celebrating its success, FreeHelpCK suffered a devastating loss with the passing of one of its volunteers.

Officials say Deb Franklin was instrumental in Operation Backpack, the annual Prom Dress giveaway, and other community events.
