Hundreds Of Traffic Charges Laid Over Long Weekend

Provincial police in the region were kept busy over the Civic Holiday long weekend dealing with hundreds of traffic offences.

The Ontario Provincial Police said two people were killed in collisions and more than 1,600 charges were laid in the West Region between August 2-5.

As part of a provincial traffic safety campaign, officers focused on distracted driving, impaired driving, seatbelt use, aggressive driving and Ontario’s “Move Over Law.”  OPP Marine Units also patrolled waterways in the region to ensure boaters were wearing life jackets and that operators had all the required safety equipment on board their vessels.

Of the charges laid, the majority, 732, were for speeding while 170 were for not wearing a seat belt. Another 31 charges were laid for distracted driving, 45 for impaired driving and 24 for stunt driving.

Officers in the West Region responded to over 4,800 calls for service over the long weekend.
