With a new local ownership group at the Downtown Chatham Centre, the call is out for what area residents would like to see in the downtown core.
It was first announced last Friday that Rob Myers, Don Tetrault, Jessica and Pete Tsirimbis, Ron Nydam, and Jim Bullock have purchased the DCC.
Acting as spokesman for the ownership group, Nydam doesn’t believe the idea of an indoor shopping mall works anymore, and they’re hoping to turn downtown Chatham into a destination district.
A number of ideas have been floated since Friday’s announcement was made, including residential, farmers’ market or grocery store, and office space. Rob Myers has even said the idea of an arena in downtown Chatham isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Nydam hopes the redevelopment will do more than just rejuvenate the downtown core.
“What we’d like to see is something here for all of Chatham-Kent,” Nydam says. “For the entire community, from the farmlands to the far-and-few-between factories, to the retail shops, to the average person that loves, lives, works, and plays in this community.”
The municipality’s Let’s Talk website now includes a comment section looking for ideas and suggestions for the almost 40 year old mall.
