As it faces significant rising costs to construct a new building on McNaughton Avenue in Chatham, the Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Center will be approaching Chatham-Kent council tonight for money to help them reach their fundraising goals.
In 2017 council agreed to provide a $1.5 million grant for the building of the new Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Centre. The centre plans on asking for an additional $1.6 million to help with construction costs at tonight’s council meeting.
The treatment centre is also asking for a $1 million loan, which will be paid back with interest to the municipality over 15 years after construction is complete.
When council gave its initial grant in 2017, the new building was estimated to cost $28.5 million. Delays in securing provincial funding has pushed the construction start date to later in 2022 or 2023. Inflation and final architect designs now estimate the building costs to almost double to approximately $48 million.
