Police have launched a safety and awareness campaign to educate residents about electric scooter use in Chatham-Kent.
With a rise in e-scooter use locally, the Chatham-Kent Police Service is reminding the public that the devices are not permitted in public areas, such as sidewalks, roads, trails, and other municipal property.
Police officials said Chatham-Kent has not opted into Ontario’s e-scooter pilot program, and local by-laws have not been established to govern their use.
“While e-scooters may be easily purchased through retail stores and online vendors, residents should be aware that ownership does not necessarily mean they can be legally operated on public property within Chatham-Kent,” police said in a news release.
During its safety campaign, officers will be educating residents about the current e-scooter regulations, while promoting safe and responsible transportation choices.
Local residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the laws and municipal regulations governing the use of e-scooters, e-bikes, and other micro-mobility devices before use.
