With available land for housing development at a premium in Wallaceburg, Chatham-Kent is moving forward with two infill housing projects in Wallaceburg.
Council approved zoning changes on Elgin Street to allow for four residential parcels to be created. The property once housed a large multi-dwelling house, but it was destroyed in a fire earlier this year. The vacant property was bought by a local developer, with plans to build four homes.
Council also approved a draft plan of subdivision and zoning by-law amendment to allow for a housing development on the former W.T. Laing public school.
Wallaceburg councillor Aaron Hall said the developments are both in the centre of the community, on properties that were vibrant—had deteriorated and will be vibrant once again.
Infill development, which means housing developments on vacant and underutilized properties in established neighbourhoods, will help to ease a housing crunch, while also reinvigorating older parts of the community.
