The investigation into wells at the site of the Wheatley gas explosion continues to move forward.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said contractors completed drilling of a second monitoring well without incident Thursday morning. No gas was discovered at the scene of the well, which is located near the Wheatley Arena.

Drilling of the first monitoring well, located in the municipal parking lot, was completed this week on Monday. However, work was halted on Sunday after workers struck a pocket of hydrogen sulphide gas 85 feet below the surface. The gas emission lasted 15 minutes and work resumed once it was safe to do so.

The information gathered from the monitoring wells will allow the investigation team to obtain groundwater and gas samples to support chemical modelling work.
