An investigation into underground wells at the site of the Wheatley gas explosion is moving to its next steps.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said on Monday that crews are beginning to install vapour probes in the municipal parking lot behind the site of the August 26 explosion on Erie Street. As well, two groundwater monitoring wells will be installed in the area.

Cameras were installed at the three wells discovered in the area late last month, to learn more about their construction and depth. Municipal officials said that part of the investigation has been completed at two of the wells.

“Although there was no conclusive evidence as to whether the wells are gas or water in nature, information gathered will be helpful to the technical team to arrange the next steps of the investigation,” the municipality said in a news release.

During a 90-minute virtual public information session on Saturday, government officials said the investigation at the site of the explosion will likely take another eight weeks, plus an additional six weeks after that before mitigation and remediation efforts will be completed.
