It’s Almost Game, Set, Match for Delayed Tennis Dome Project

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 21, 2024 for a new domed tennis court facility on Bear Line Road in Chatham.

Chatham’s proposed tennis dome is getting re-served to city council.

Council will vote on Monday on the new timeline for the indoor tennis facility that was to be constructed at the park previously known as Bear Line Regional Park.

Originally set to be operational in 2024, construction is now set to commence this June with completion around mid-October.

In 2023, Tennis Clubs of Canada (TCC) entered into an agreement with the city to construct and operate the indoor tennis facility. In his report to council, Chatham-Kent Director of Parks and Facilities Rob Pollock explained that the TCC could not complete the build back in 2024 due to “delays in equipment which would not allow them to meet the construction period.”

A grant that was given to Tennis Canada towards the construction of the dome has been extended into 2025 with the club insisting they are committed to providing an indoor tennis facility for Chatham-Kent.

The park which was previously known as Bear Line Regional Park, is also getting a new name.

St. Clair College, who donated the land for the project, was given naming rights and settled on the name, St. Clair College Community Park.

Phase 1 of the project, which included water, sanitary, electrical, design fees, and a parking lot with lights has already been completed.
