Brock University is set to honour a Chatham baseball legend for his achievements on and off the field.

Fergie Jenkins will receive a honourary doctorate from the St. Catherines university during a Faculty of Applied Health Sciences convocation ceremony on June 12. The former Chicago Cubs pitcher will then deliver an address to the graduating class.

Jenkins was the first Canadian ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, with a major league career spanning nearly two decades on four teams. He threw 267 complete games in the MLB, with 49 shut-outs, and he earned seven 20-win seasons, six of which were back-to-back.

Off the field, he founded the Fergie Jenkins Foundation, which aims to “serve humanitarian need through the love of sport” and has supported hundreds of charities across North America.

Brock University’s 115th Convocation will include nine ceremonies from June 10 to June 14.
