Charges have been laid after a Sarnia man fled the scene of a collision just east of Chatham.

Emergency crews responded to Longwoods Road in Louisville shortly before 8 o’clock Tuesday morning after an eastbound car veered into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle. The second vehicle left the road, coming to rest in a field, leaving the driver with physical injuries.

According to Chatham-Kent Police, the accused fled the scene before officers arrived. The police K9 unit and drones were deployed, locating the man about two kilometres west of the crash site.

Officers suspected the accused was under the influence of an intoxicating substance, and further investigation showed he was already wanted by Sarnia Police.

The 26-year-old was taken to police headquarters for a drug recognition evaluation. He has since been charged with failing to stop after an accident, impaired driving causing bodily harm, and failure/refusal to comply with a demand. He was also issued a summons for driving without a valid driver’s licence.

The accused was released with conditions and will be back in court next week.
