With warmer weather kicking off the long weekend, the provincial government is encouraging everyone to be on the lookout for ticks.

The major concern is Lyme disease, which can be transmitted by an infected black-legged tick.

Officials say infected ticks can be found almost anywhere in Ontario.

To prevent being bitten by a tick, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health recommends wearing light coloured, long-sleeved shirts and closed toed shoes when spending time in wooded areas or tall grass.

After spending time outdoors, Dr. David Williams says to check yourself, your children, and pets for ticks, and to remove them immediately.
