One of the area’s strongest lobby groups has come out strongly against the possibility of allowing backyard chickens in all residential areas of Chatham-Kent.
In a letter to council, the Kent Federation of Agriculture strongly opposes the idea of backyard chickens in Chatham-Kent.
Reasons given by the KFA for not allowing backyard chickens in urban areas is the spread of disease, including Avian Influenza (AI) which KFA says poses a very real risk to the local food supply system.
Meantime a recent survey shows more area residents than not like the idea of allowing chickens in local backyards.
Council will hear an information report regarding resident surveys on the potential of having backyard chickens.
Almost 5,000 residents completed the survey, with the majority (68 percent) being in favour of the municipality allowing backyard chickens in urban areas.
