No injuries have been reported following a kitchen fire in a Chatham apartment.

Fire fighters responded to the building on Adelaide Street shortly before 8:30 Wednesday night and found smoke filling the unit and moving into the hallway.

The blaze, which originated in the stove top exhaust, was quickly extinguished. Crews opened up the walls and ceiling to make sure the flames hadn’t spread. Damage from the fire is estimated at $25,000.

The woman living in the apartment managed to escape safely, and was given support from Victim Services and Paw animal rescue to find alternate accommodations for herself and her cat until they are able to return home.

Crews checked all of the other units in the building for smoke damage before clearing the scene several hours later.

Firefighters were back in the area today, visiting surrounding homes to check alarms and discuss fire safety, as part of the CKFR’s After the Fire Reassurance Campaign.
