All levels of government are coming together to control the algal bloom situation in Lake Erie.
Dozens of area residents attended a public meeting in Chatham last night, where a draft of the Lake Erie Action Plan was presented.
Manager of Strategic Analysis at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Madhu Malhotra says the agriculture community plays a role in the plan:
“The draft action plans includes a range of voluntary and regulatory approaches for point sources, which are municipal and industrial waste water treatment plants as an example,” Malhotra says, “and non-point sources, which would be agriculture and storm water runoff.”
The draft plan outlines 76 actions aimed at supporting and strengthening policies, programs, and legislation.
While nothing is set in stone just yet, the plan hopes to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering Lake Erie by 40%.
