Chatham’s Calvin Smit’s love of karate training has him set to compete in the WMO World Karate Championships this year.
The 13-year-old is a purple belt at Chatham’s Zanshin Dojo Karate Club and is looking to travel to Dublin this fall.
Calvin’s father Eryn says his journey started back in the spring.
“Calvin went to the WMO Nationals Tournament in Milton in June and competed in his regular division classes”, says Smit.
From there he placed high enough to head to Ireland this fall.
He placed 3rd after competing against 13-17-year-olds, most of whom were black belts – and out of that, he received an invitation to join WMO’s Team Canada to head over [to Ireland] to complete”, Smit explains.
Calvin’s family is looking to raise the money through a Go Fund Me campaign.
