A group of Chatham-Kent firefighters is being recognized for their selfless actions in responding to a deadly crash on the ice of Lake St. Clair.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services said five of its firefighters have received the St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Award for their actions when responding to a collision involving two snowmobiles on February 13, 2021, near Mitchell’s Bay.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, while another was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“I am extremely proud of our firefighters for being recognized by our partnering agencies for such a challenging occurrence,” said Fire Chief Chris Case in a statement online. “Congratulations from everyone at CK Fire.”

CK firefighters Ray Trahan Sr., Richard Peltier, Natasha Lozon, Paul Tremblay, and Andre Lapris were presented their awards by the OPP commissioner and the St. John Ambulance commissioner during the OPP’s West Region Awards Ceremony on Wednesday.

The St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Awards program began 30 years ago to acknowledge individuals or groups of individuals who have administered first aid while saving or attempting to save a life.
