Flood advisories seem to be far too common for local residents in Chatham-Kent and surrounding areas.
Once again, a flood advisory is in effect from both the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority.
The St Clair Region has issued a flood watch, in effect through Wednesday with minor flooding and road closures already being reported.
Areas across the watershed have recorded rainfall amounts varying between 15 and 50 millimetres over the past 36 hours, with minimal amounts of rainfall forecasted for overnight Monday. Water levels are slowly rising across the watershed, with some locations experiencing minor flooding into natural floodplain areas. Waterworks Road from Moore Line to north of Courtright Line in St. Clair Township is closed due to flooding.
Rising water levels may impact Stanley Line between Kimball Road and Waubuno Road as well as Pretty Road north of McCallum Line.
The Lower Thames has issued a Flood Warning for the communities of Shrewsbury and Erieau, also effective through Wednesday.
The Rondeau Bay communities are already experiencing flooding on the bay side, with water surrounding homes and covering some roads.
The LTVCA says the public should avoid the area if possible. Excess unnecessary traffic can interfere with residents attempting to protect their property, and waves generated by through traffic on flooded roads may result in further damages to private property.
Meanwhile, the LTVCA says water issues weren’t as bad as expected along the Thames River. The LTVCA no longer expects to operate the Diversion Channel, nor will the Thames River get as high as previously expected.
Ponding and localized flooding may still occur in areas of poor drainage and some local watercourses could still rise and each bank full conditions or spill their banks.
