A local project to help kids in Guatemala has taken a big step forward.
The Chatham, Wallaceburg, and Blenheim Rotary Clubs have been collecting smartphones and tablets for the last few months to be used for a literacy project.
Project coordinator Peter Tanner says they’ve been approved for a grant from Rotary International to the tune of $133,000 US.
Tanner says they already have a plan for the funds.
“We want to do 55 schools over 3 years. We’re going to do 10 schools the first year – they’ve already been selected,” says Tanner. “Each school will get one of these units that creates a Wi-Fi hot spot. We’re also going to be putting in 6 Chromebooks which are inexpensive laptops that have to work with either the internet or one of our Wi-Fi systems.”
Tanner says students will then have access to tens of thousands of e-books and other online resources.
He’s hoping to have all of the resources in place and Guatemalan teachers trained early in 2019.
