An Indigenous manufacturer is teaming with a Wheatley-based ship-building company to support Canada’s marine and defence sectors.

ATMIS Protective Equipment lnc. and Hike Metal Products Ltd. have signed an agreement to work together on mutually beneficial initiatives, with a focus on small and medium-sized maritime vessel builds.

Both companies said the deal is the only one of its kind in the country.

“This marks the first time an Indigenous manufacturer has ventured into the new vessel build market in support of the government and larger defence primes,” said ATMIS President Andy Valentine, in a news release.

Based in Wheatley, Hike Metal is a manufacturer of marine vessels that has been designing and building boats and ships since 1958.

ATMIS is an Indigenous advanced manufacturer with plants in Windsor and Chatham. The company manufactures custom-machined products, fabrications, and robotic production solutions for the defence industry.
