The Chatham-Kent Animal Rescue is taking issue with the naming of the municipality’s new animal shelter.
Last week, council decided to go with the name, ‘Chatham-Kent Animal Shelter.’
Spokesperson Renee Geniole says the group had already discussed this with municipal officials prior to the announcement.
“Our concern is that the names are very, very similar,” Geniole says. “There’s already been instance where Chatham-Kent Animal Rescue has been mistaken for the shelter, so to change the name to something which is simply one word away, which the two words are very similar to each other in meaning, it has us concerned that it’s going to cause a lot more confusion.”
The rescue group has dealt with countless instances of people trying to make donations to the new shelter by contacting them instead, or asking them to undertake duties normally done by the municipality’s animal control contractor, which will operate out of the new facility.
Geniole says they’ve been in touch with their lawyer as well as municipal councillors to try to address the issue.
