Listen in for broad & narrow on The Spotlight all this week at 3:40 pm during Weekdaze with Jay Smith

broadandnarrow2Salt and pepper. Bacon and eggs. Lennon and McCartney. Sometimes it takes two to do it right…That is the essence of Broad & Narrow.

Broad & Narrow is an alt-rock duo from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Nate Toews and Brent Nowlan became writing partners following similar musical journeys through the local punk rock scene. As multi-instrumentalists, the pair wrote and produced their entire debut album, We Saw This Coming. Drawing from their own eclectic musical tastes, Nate and Brent craft songs that strive to be both thought provoking and musically entertaining. Creative freedom, with one foot grounded in reality, makes Broad & Narrow’s sound truly unique. The guys plan on making their own brand of rock as long as their fans are willing to listen.

Members of the alternative-rock two-piece, Brent Nowlan (guitar, vocals, bass, keys) and Nate Toews (vocals, guitar, drums), came together out of necessity. After cutting their teeth as journeymen musicians in southern Ontario for years, Brent and Nate were collectively fed up with trying to gather the right musicians and force a band together. Combining their complimentary talents was almost effortless as the pair began writing and recording, on a whim, in mid-2012. Without any long-term plans, the two generated songs quickly. Soon, a small recording project turned into an EP, which evolved into the band’s full-length debut, We Saw This Coming.

The album, like the members of the band, avoids being contained within a singular genre. “The album came together so naturally,” Nate says. “The musical cohesion between us is what really makes Broad & Nar-row what it is.” Lyrically, the band tackles issues like faith, relationships, human tragedy and forgiveness. Un-derneath it all, Broad & Narrow maintain a sense of hope and freedom in every-thing they do. “The creative control we have, being a small band, would cripple some,” says Brent. “But, for us, we are energized with the possibilities we have.”

Exploring musical possibility led We Saw This Coming to receive positive reviews on the Emerging Indie Bands Blog and others. Broad & Narrow have also been featured on a few indie radio shows online and across Ontario. As the guys continue to write new material and hone their live show, one thing is certain, the music will continue if there is a story to be told. A story better told by two.

“The storytelling is well constructed with the feel of the music reflecting the tale unfolding “
-Tim, Emerging Indie Bands
