A local production company is taking the show on the road.
Winesday The Musical is the work of Five Cork Productions, an all-female theatre company based out of Chatham-Kent. The story focuses on a group of women who get together each week under the guise of book clubs and yoga, but really just drink wine and talk about their lives. Billed as “cabaret meets cabernet,” the production is written by Jenne Wason with music by Joseph Benoit.
The show first launched at the Capitol Theatre in Chatham in 2017, and co-founder Alysson Storey says the production is emerging from the pandemic with new life and a new partnership with Hernder Estate Wines.
“We have been working over Zoom and we are thrilled to announce we are launching our Winesday The Musical and Wine Tasting in Niagara wine country,” Storey says. “After some great runs in both Chatham and Windsor, we are thrilled to be able to grow the show and go right into the heart of everything wine appreciation and theatre and wine-related, and we’re really, really excited about it.”
Five Cork Productions is now in the process of hiring a cast and crew for performances at Hernder Estate Wines.
“We’re all based in Chatham, we don’t have the family situations to be able to go to Niagara every week to perform,” Storey explains. “We’re going to be hiring a director, a producer, and a cast in the Niagara region who will be performing the show and we’ll be the ones overhead in the production company side.”
The production company is hopeful for a strong run with prospective audiences clamouring for live theatre as COVID restrictions lift.
As for Five Cork’s Chatham-Kent roots, writer Jenne Wason is currently working on a sequel, Winesday 2, with plans to return to the stage locally. Fundraisers are also being planned to help launch the Niagara shows.
