The community is stepping up to help send local kids to camp.

The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario launched its annual Fill the Bus CAMPaign on June 10th with a goal of raising $200,000 to send 1000 kids to camp across the region.

Locally, the Chatham-Kent YMCA hopes to raise $14,000 to support 70 kids.

Officials say so far, enough money has been raised to send 48 children to camp, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

“We believe that spending time at camp builds confidence and independence that campers will take with them through to adulthood,” said Andrew Lockie, CEO, YMCA of Southwestern Ontario. “We appreciate that the cost of camp is more challenging for some, and our Fill the Bus campaign raises funds to ensure every child can attend camp, regardless of their financial circumstances.”

YMCA officials say those who attend camp have reported increased environmental awareness, positive attitudes towards physical activity, emotional intelligence, personal development, and self-confidence.

“As a charity, the Y would not be able to send these kids to camp independently, so we greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors like RSD Maintenance & General Contracting, with a generous donation of $5,000, as well as our staff, volunteers, and private donors. We are absolutely thrilled to help so many kids have the experience of a lifetime this summer,” said Timarra Milmine, General Manager of the Chatham-Kent YMCA.
