With the forecast calling for heavy rainfall, the local conservation authority is warning of potential flooding.
Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning with as much as 30-50 mm of precipitation expected Wednesday and into Thursday. Officials with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority say areas of ponding, standing water, and localized flooding are likely in the region.
Local watercourses such as the Thames River are expected to rise and some could spill their banks in low-lying river flats. The sidewalk along the river in downtown Chatham is expected to flood.
Water levels on the Thames River could remain high until next week as water works its way downstream.
Meantime, a flood outlook has also been issued by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, warning that saturated soil could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.
Local residents are urged to use caution around rivers, ditches, and streams as slippery banks and fast-moving cold water can be dangerous.
