A stray pony now has a new forever home after it was found running loose on the streets of Chatham.
Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAW Rescue) said animal control officers were contacted about a horse at large within city limits at around 5 a.m. on Sunday. With assistance from a local horse enthusiast, animal control was able to safely take the pony off the streets and into their care.
The animal was held with the hopes of finding its owner, however, the animal remained unclaimed.
The pony, affectionately named “Peanut,” has now been adopted by Kate and Ryan Irelan, who are providing a new, appropriate home where its needs can be properly met.
Local residents are reminded that horses and ponies are only permitted on properties zoned for agricultural use. Keeping equines in non-agricultural zones can pose safety concerns for both the animals and the public.
