Hiring for Chatham’s newly announced auto parts plant is expected to begin in the next couple of months.

Magna said its new Chatham manufacturing facility is expected to create up to 150 jobs and the company has already begun the process of filling those positions.

“We are currently finalizing the list of team members from the St. Thomas division that would like to support the Chatham location, and that will help determine exact hiring needs,” Magna said in an emailed response.

After announcing its new Chatham facility on Wednesday, Magna said the hiring process could begin as early as June, with training offered at the company’s St Thomas location.

“The training will be over several weeks and will cover items such as Magna culture, safety, quality, continuous improvement, welding, etc,” the company said.

The Chatham plant will expand Magna’s operations in St. Thomas, by producing battery enclosures for the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Magna will take possession of the 170,000 square foot facility, located on Irwin Street on the former Crown Cork & Seal property, on April 1 before moving in equipment in June.

According to Magna, renovations will take place in the offices, boardrooms, and change rooms/bathrooms area. However, no major changes are required for the rest of the building.

The Chatham facility is expected to begin production in the fall.
