The Chatham Rotary Club wants to create a ‘Miracle Field’ in the north end of Chatham.

The organization is taking on the $750,000 project to create a fully accessible baseball field.

Past president Don ‘Sparky’ Leonard says it’s about making sport available to everybody.

“There’s a group in Chatham called Warrior Baseball, it’s for people that have some disabilities and don’t play regular baseball and currently they’re trying to play on regular baseball fields,” Leonard explains. “What we’re hoping to do is create an environment and a field of their own so they can enjoy the same sport that most of us do.”

The Miracle Field would include a completely flat field to accommodate players with mobility issues or visual impairment, as well as wheelchair accessible dugouts, restrooms, concessions stands, and picnic pavilions.

Mike Genge, Executive Director of the Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Centre Foundation, says an accessible field would be a great addition to the community.

“This project will only help them in ways like better facilities, better way to do Challenger Baseball, but also mental health, also location, all those things will be absolutely fantastic for our kids.”

The Chatham Rotary Club will look internally first for some seed money before turning their attention to the community to fundraise.
