A Chatham man will be answering to a judge in court after he was arrested twice in the same day.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded to a wellness check in Chatham at around noon on Thursday after a man was found passed out in a vehicle located in a business parking lot.

Police were able to wake the man by knocking on the window and directing him out of the vehicle. After seeing drug paraphernalia in the vehicle and believing the man was impaired, he was arrested and taken to the local hospital for further tests. He was charged and later released with a future court date.

However, later that day, officers were called to an address on Grand Avenue West where the same man had attempted to steal various items from the basement of the building. Security personnel attempted to keep the man from leaving the scene, but he refused to cooperate and struck one of the guards.

Police arrived at the building shortly after and arrested a suspect. A 44-year-old Chatham man is now charged with theft over $5,000, obstructing a public officer, assault and impaired driving.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
