March Break Safety Tips

It’s March Break, and Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services has a few safety tips for families.

Public Educator Whitney Burk says one of the main concerns is in the kitchen.

“If you have older children who are going to be cooking for themselves, make sure they’ve been taught how to correctly use the appliances,” Burk says. “Always stay in the kitchen when they’re cooking, teach them about burn awareness and how to treat a burn if it did happen.”

Burk says going over a home escape plan is also helpful to prepare your family in case of a fire or emergency.

Meantime, if you’re going away for March Break, Chatham-Kent Police want to make sure your home is secure.

Officials say to unplug any unnecessary items while you’re away, including the internet. Lock up valuables and keep them out of sight, and have someone check on your home.

They also say to keep your plans off social media, and to lock all doors and windows.
