Maroons To Face Off Against Mental Health Stigma

A local advocacy group is partnering with a youth hockey team in Chatham in an effort to combat the stigma surrounding mental health.

The Chatham Maroons will host a special hockey game later this month as part of the Face Off for Mental Health program, organized by the Mental Health Table.

“We’re going to be doing mental health promotion that night so that fans can see that it’s important to talk about mental health,” said Cathy DeBresser Knowler, chair of the Mental Health Table. “It’s always good for even our young athletes to see our older athletes, knowing that it’s ok to talk about when you’re struggling.”

The game against the St. Thomas Stars will feature activities designed to raise awareness and foster community engagement, including a special auction of unique green jerseys worn by the Maroons during warm-ups. A moment of silence will also be held as a tribute to those affected by anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and many other mental health challenges. As well, green ribbons will be handed out at the box office for fans to show their support for mental health awareness.

According to DeBresser Knowler, one in five young people typically struggle with their mental health. However, following the COVID-19 pandemic, she said that number is closer to one in three.

“In hockey terms, that’s at least one kid on the line. It could be one coach, many fans, many parents struggling with their mental health. We thought it was important to bring that to life in the area… to make the arena a safe place for everyone,” said DeBresser Knowler.

The Mental Health Table has previously worked with the Maroons hockey club to promote the BeSafe app, a tool designed to connect youth to local mental health resources quickly and easily.

The Face Off for Mental Health game will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 19 at Memorial Arena.
