Couples interested in a civil marriage ceremony can now attend the Civic Centre in Chatham.
During its meeting on Monday, Chatham-Kent Council approved a motion to authorize the municipal clerk to offer civic marriage ceremonies under the Ontario Marriage Act.
“As municipal clerk, I am honoured to have the authority to officiate non-religious, legal civil marriage ceremonies within Chatham-Kent. It is a privilege to be able to share in the couple’s special day,” said Clerk Judy Smith in a news release
The ceremonies will be conducted by appointment at the Civic Centre atrium, council chambers, or the building’s back patio during regular business hours. Each service will last roughly 30 minutes and they can be attended by a maximum of 12 people.
The Ontario Marriage Act requires that all civil marriages be non-denominational, however, there will be three types of ceremonies to choose from, including a same-gender marriage ceremony.
A $250 fee will be charged for each ceremony.
