At the annual mayor’s address yesterday, Canniff says he’d like to see a continued focus on economic development, including expansion of the Bloomfield Business Park.

“People are demanding to be off the 401 and they want to be near the population base so it’s easier for transportation for their workers,” Canniff says. “Eventually some day, we build the infrastructure there to draw the people to create that.”

Canniff believes one of the keys to sustaining growth in Chatham-Kent is resident attraction and retention.

“All the things that flow from that, if we have people coming here and we have housing, there’s a lot of pieces to get there. If we have more people coming, a lot of things start falling in place.”

Canniff says he’d like to see a civics class being held for grade 7 and 8 students at the Civic Centre to keep kids engaged.

The annual address, hosted by the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, touched on a variety of other issues, including the hot real estate market in CK, homelessness, the debate over creating a Charing Cross Road interchange off the 401, and increasing access to broadband internet.
