As reported on Tuesday, C-K Council made the decision to cut some substantial costs through the summer including closing arenas and outdoor pools.
Summer rec programs are also on pause.
Mayor Darrin Canniff says those closures and cancellations were likely inevitable. BUT they could be changed if the province and the pandemic deem it possible.
“According to Dr Colby, he doesn’t see anything opening up through this summer,” says the Mayor. “Now, if things change, in the next couple of weeks for some crazy reason, we would certainly re-think everything.”
Alongside municipal grass cutting and trimming, sports fields are also now on reduced maintenance schedules to “trim” costs.
“I don’t see a soccer season happening, but if next week they said yes, we can play soccer, well then we’d start cutting the grass and get the fields ready so the kids can play soccer,” adds Canniff.
Council expects a $3.3 million impact due to the COVID-19 crisis. These cuts are expected to recover approximately $2 million for the municipality.
