Chatham-Kent’s mayor is looking for answers as local residents continue to be gouged at the pumps.

On Thursday, Mayor Darrin Canniff called on the Federal Competition Bureau and the Canadian Fuels Association to examine the price of gas in Chatham.

“We’re all aware of the volatile nature of the oil industry at present but that doesn’t explain why prices in the community of Chatham are often 10 cents a litre or more higher than prices in any other part of Chatham-Kent or surrounding communities,” Canniff said in a media release.

Gas prices this week in Chatham ranged from $1.86 per litre to $1.94, a costly option compared to $1.79 per litre in Wallaceburg. In comparison, London’s lowest rate was around $1.74 per litre, while Windsor’s was at around $1.77 per litre.

The mayor said he’s hopeful that bringing attention to the situation will be enough to get prices in line with other communities.

“I’m not expecting a full investigation, but the broader community needs to know that Chatham residents are being subjected to higher than necessary prices,” said Canniff. “At a time of growing inflation, our residents don’t need this added burden.”
