Chatham-Kent’s mayor is glad to see more local businesses opening up as the municipality settles into the Red zone of Ontario’s COVID recovery.

Darrin Canniff says it’s great news for the economy and the community as a whole.

“It’s a step moving forward, looking forward to getting out of Red into other zones, but at least it starts getting business open,” Canniff says. “I’m excited that we can start getting small business, haircuts, and all those different things, we can start doing those kinds of things again, which is good.”

Canniff is pleased to see the municipality’s COVID caseload continue to fall, and hopes that by the next time the province makes changes, CK should be able to open up even more.

“I would sure like to hope so, I’m crossing my fingers. If we keep up with the numbers we’ve got going right now, I think we’ll definitely get to another colour. I’d love to see restaurants being where you have enough people to go in and make it viable to have in-house service.”

As part of the Red framework, restaurants are only allowed 10 patrons indoors, although take-out and curb-side pickup are still options. Chatham-Kent retail stores are allowed up to 50% capacity, while grocery stores and pharmacies can have as much as 75%.
