Chatham-Kent could soon have its own professional basketball team.
CK Mayor Darrin Canniff said discussions have been ongoing between the municipality and the Basketball Super League (BSL) in the hopes of establishing a local team.
“It’s an exciting opportunity. We’ve been looking at this for a couple of years now,” said Canniff.
Canniff said the league commissioner has expressed interest in bringing a team to Chatham-Kent and more recently has taken notice of the success of Chatham-Kent’s Intercounty Baseball League team, the CK Barnstormers.
“They’ve always looked at Chatham-Kent as a great opportunity for a team,” said Canniff. “We’re in, hopefully, the final stages of getting a team to come here.”
Should the league move forward with plans to establish a team in Chatham-Kent, Canniff said the municipality could see that become a reality in 2026.
However, he said the league would have to establish a home court for the team within an existing building in the municipality. While current league teams in the league have used the court at the St. Clair College Thames Campus, options are still being examined.
“I know they’re looking at various locations,” said Canniff.
