Expect a sea of pink at next Monday’s Chatham-Kent council meeting.
After being away from Chatham-Kent council for 10 months, Councillor Melissa Harrigan is expected to be back at the next council meeting scheduled for October 30.
Councillor Marjorie Crew, with Harrigan’s blessing, made the news official at Monday’s council meeting.
Harrigan, who represents the ward of West Kent, was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma– a type of breast cancer, in late 2022. Concentrating on her health, Harrigan took an absence from her role.
During her time away from council, Harrigan used her public presence to raise awareness about cancer and encourage other women to do self-checks. She also led the Her Fight is Our Fight campaign which helped women across all stages of their cancer diagnosis and journey in Chatham-Kent.
The campaign raised over $30,000 to help purchase a new VELA Mammography Chair and fund needed enhancements to the mammography room at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.
