Chatham-Kent is honouring a longtime municipal politician who represented the Tilbury community for more than 40 years.
An unveiling ceremony was held on Tuesday for the Bryon Fluker Memorial Trail in Tilbury’s Memorial Park.
Fluker was elected to Tilbury Town Council in 1972, serving as a councillor and mayor of Tilbury. He later served as a member of Chatham-Kent Council following amalgamation in 1998.
Ward 1 Councillor Melissa Sharpe-Harrigan, who spearheaded the motion to rename the trail in Fluker’s honour, said the path will stand as a lasting tribute to Fluker’s dedication to the community.
“It really is a way to honour Bryon’s legacy in a way that is visible in the town but also meaningful to the person that he was,” she said.
Nellie Fluker, who was married to Bryon for 55 years, said her husband was beloved as a local politician but also in his career as a high school teacher.
“I happy for that,” she said. “This [trail] is a great honour and I am so happy for him that he’s being remembered. He looked after this community for 46 years and never backed down from any issues.”
CK Council approved the commemorative naming following Fluker’s passing in 2022.
