Mental Health Crisis Leads to Standoff in Chatham

Quite the commotion in south-side Chatham last night.
Area residents took to social media about a stand-off including armed officers on Tweedsmuir Avenue around 6 o’clock.
Chatham-Kent police say officers arrested a man dealing with a mental health crisis.
Around 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, police responded to a disturbance at a residence on Tweedsmuir Ave.
Police attempted to negotiate with a man in crisis to have him exit the home.  The man refused and officers entered the home just before 7:00 p.m. to apprehend him.  He was transported to hospital for assistance.
Through investigation, police learned that the man had threatened a family member.  This morning, the 23-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with uttering threats.  He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Chatham-Kent Police would like to remind everyone that services remain open during the pandemic for those requiring help and support.
