Mercato Fresh, located in the former Target store at Chatham’s Thames Lea Plaza, opened its doors yesterday with an official grand opening held this morning.

Co-owner Jonathan Reaume says the response from the community has been overwhelming.

“We felt the love from Chatham early on when we started our social media platform and the response from the city I’ve never felt from any market we’ve been in,” Reaume says. “I think the town appreciates what we’re trying to do, we’re trying to give a fresh approach to buying groceries and we’ve basically put a five-star restaurant inside a grocery store.”

President Marc Romualdi says the store offers a fresher alternative than conventional grocery stores.

“Everything is made fresh on the premises and that’s what you don’t get anywhere else. All our soups, our stocks, our bone broths, everything is made here. You’re going to taste the quality of Mercato Fresh.”

The 14,000 square foot store is the company’s flagship boutique market, an offshoot of the M.R. Meats brand based in Windsor.
