Municipal officials are crediting the Wheatley community for taking the rights steps after smelling gas in the downtown area.
Chatham-Kent firefighters responded to the area of Talbot and Erie streets in downtown Wheatley on Sunday at around 10 p.m., after a gas odour was reported.
An initial investigation was conducted and zero gas readings were detected. However, after checking the gas meters in the downtown core, a minor gas leak was found. Enbridge was then contacted to repair one of the gas meters.
“We commend the community for taking the right steps to call when a gas odour is detected, keeping safety top of mind,” said Windsor-Essex/Chatham-Kent Operations Manager Brain Chauvin in a news release.
Chauvin emphasized that anyone who smells gas should immediately call the municipality’s emergency number at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe distance.
“Never assume someone else has called,” he added.
An evacuation zone remains in place in downtown Wheatley after a release of methane hydrogen sulphide caused an explosion on August 26, 2021, which destroyed two buildings and injured 20 people.
