Downtown Wheatley will be a hub of activity today.

Crews have been cleaning up following the demolition of the old pharmacy at the corner of Talbot Road and Erie Street, and preparations are now underway for another production flow test on the monitoring well.

Officials say much like the test performed last October, water and gas will be pumped out of the well and sent through a separator as samples from the by-products are collected and analyzed. The gas will then be sent to the scrubber and the water will be discharged to the sewer. The pilot light will be seen lit on the flare stack as a backup measure.

The section of Erie Street North between Talbot Road and Elm Street will remain closed until Thursday April 20.  This will allow Public Works to move the temporary barriers in a fashion that will restore the access for all traffic like before the August, 2021 explosion.

Residents will also notice an increased presence of emergency crews on standby and monitoring the air quality outside the site.

Residents are reminded that any time the smell of gas is detected, call 9-1-1 immediately.
