It will be a celebration of Indigenous culture this weekend at the Delaware of the Thames First Nation at Moraviantown.

The First Nations community will celebrate its 51st annual Pow Wow on Saturday and Sunday.

“For us, Pow Wows are a great time to celebrate who we are but also it’s a homecoming for community members who have been away for work or school. It’s also an opportunity to share our culture, our way of life,” said organizer and Moraviantown Councillor Sherry Huff. “Our culture is alive and well and we continue to breathe life into it every time we have this event.”

The Pow Wow’s Grand Entry will take place on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., as well as on Sunday at noon.

Several indigenous dance competitions will also be held in several age categories, along with a drum competition and hand drum competition.

“If you’ve never been to a Pow Wow, this is an opportunity to see some of our best dancers competing for that top spot, [as well as] our best drummers and hand drummers competing,” said Huff.

Huff added that the traditional Indigenous clothing is also one of the highlights of the Pow Wow each year.

“The regalia is absolutely stunning and most people make their own,” she said. “Sometimes it’s a family affair where everybody chips in to make the beautiful bustles and the beautiful dresses and the hair pieces,” she said.

The Pow Wow will be held behind the Community Centre at 14811 Schoolhouse Line. General admission is $8, $5 for seniors and children under 10 can attend for free.
