Demolition work is expected to begin next week in downtown Wheatley as revitalization efforts continue.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said the owners of 24 Erie St. N. have hired a contractor to commence the demolition process on Monday, July 21.

Erie Street North will remain open during demolition, and work is expected to be completed within two weeks. Traffic disruptions are not anticipated but residents are asked to use caution and keep clear of the site.

Progress to revitalize Wheatley’s downtown core has been ongoing for several years, following the 2021 gas explosion. Multiple other buildings that were damaged in the blast have already been purchased by the municipality and demolished.

However, underground gas leaks continue to be an issue in the town, with multiple hydrogen sulfide emissions detected behind the Wheatley library over the last few weeks.
