Chatham-Kent is in line for $2.8-million in provincial funding to support those experiencing homelessness.
Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton says it is part of an overall $30-million investment in several southwestern Ontario cities to help more people experiencing or at risk of homelessness find the right housing services and other supports.
“As cities like London, Windsor and Chatham continue to lead Ontario’s economic recovery, we need to make sure no one is left behind,” said Monte McNaughton, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. “That is why our government is making common-sense investments to help people keep roofs over their heads, stay on the job, and build stronger communities for us all.”
The funding earmarked for Chatham-Kent is an increase of $177,838 over last year.
The new Homelessness Prevention Program, announced by the province earlier this week, replaces three existing programs: Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative, Home for Good, and the Strong Communities Rent Supplement Program.
The goal is to simplify and streamline operations so municipal service managers can spend less time on paperwork and more time working with their clients to help find housing and other supports and help those at-risk of homelessness stay in their homes.
Access to Homelessness Prevention Program funding will be based on having in place a By-Name List that meets the provincial requirements and contains detailed, up-to-date information from individuals experiencing homelessness to help connect them to local supports.
