Much-needed sewer and watermain repairs are expected to shut down a section of Elgin Street in Wallaceburg beginning next month.
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission has voted to move forward with the construction project that will include the replacement of the existing sanitary sewer, storm sewer and watermain along Elgin Street between Forhan Street and Lorne Avenue.
The asphalt road surface, driveway approaches, curb, sidewalks, and boulevard will also be restored.
Chatham-Kent Council awarded a $3.9 million contract to Clarke Construction for the project earlier this month. The funding was also approved as part of the 2025 Capital Budget.
Ongoing operational and structural issues have plagued Elgin Street over the last several years.
Public Works has conducted numerous repairs to both the storm and sanitary sewers in the area. As well, the cast iron watermain, installed in the 1940s, has experienced multiple breaks, causing further infrastructure challenges. As a result of repeated excavation and emergency repairs, the roadway, concrete curbs, and sidewalks have deteriorated and are in need of reconstruction.
Phase 1 of the project is expected to begin in September and will continue as weather permits. Phase 2 will begin in spring 2027, with completion of the overall project anticipated by August 2027.
